Ice Maker Control System And Method

US Patent:
8484987, Jul 16, 2013
Filed:
Feb 26, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/713399
Inventors:
David R. Ducharme - Anderson SC, US
Russell Watts - Flat Rock NC, US
David L. Hall - Piedmont SC, US
Cornel Comsa - Anderson SC, US
Marcelo Candeo - Anderson SC, US
Dennis Carl Hansen - Anderson SC, US
Assignee:
Electrolux Home Products - Charlotte NC
International Classification:
F25C 1/00
F25D 21/06
US Classification:
62138, 62155, 62158, 62276
Abstract:
Provided is a method and system for forming ice pieces with an ice maker that includes a mold defining a plurality of cavities for receiving water to be frozen into ice pieces. A processor controls delivery of a refrigerant to freeze water received in the plurality of cavities into ice pieces. A freeze signal transmitted by a temperature sensor embedded within the mold is received by the processor, the freeze signal indicating that a temperature of a portion of the mold adjacent to the temperature sensor has reached a freeze temperature where the water in at least one of the cavities has achieved a frozen state to initiate harvesting of the frozen ice pieces. Defrosting a system evaporator can also be coordinated with operation of the ice maker.

System And Method For Classifying A Vehicle Occupant

US Patent:
8499879, Aug 6, 2013
Filed:
Aug 13, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/856300
Inventors:
Russell C. Watts - Ann Arbor MI, US
Assignee:
Robert Bosch GmbH - Stuttgart
International Classification:
B60K 28/00
US Classification:
180273, 180271, 701 45, 701 46, 701 48, 701 49
Abstract:
A system for classifying an occupant using a reduced quantity of force sensors. The system includes one or more force sensors, an electronic control unit (“ECU”), and a vehicle safety system. The force sensors are, for example, i-Bolt™ sensors, or other suitable force sensors or force sensing systems. The ECU includes, among other things, an occupant classification module and a safety monitoring module. The occupant classification module receives signals from the force sensors, determines one or more moments about a fixed point of a vehicle occupant control volume, and determines an occupant classification metric based on a mass of the control volume and a center of gravity of the control volume. The occupant classification module uses the occupant classification metric to classify an occupant into one of a plurality of occupant classifications. Based on the occupant classification, the safety monitoring module controls one or more vehicle safety systems.

Ultrasound Transducer Temperature Compensation Methods, Apparatus And Programs

US Patent:
6470286, Oct 22, 2002
Filed:
Nov 1, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/002453
Inventors:
Ralf Seip - Oxford MI
Russell C. Watts - Ann Arbor MI
Assignee:
Robert Bosch Corporation - Broadview IL
International Classification:
G01K 1500
US Classification:
702 99, 280735, 600587, 701 47, 702 39
Abstract:
Method, apparatus and computer programs are described for compensating for the effect of temperature on the sensitivity of electrostatic ultrasound (US) transducers, particularly as used in an automotive occupancy sensing (AOS) systems for sensing the nature or type of occupant and the location of the occupant with respect to the vehicle interior. The invention permits the AOS to classify the occupancy state of the vehicle from a US echo signal substantially free of the effects of temperature on signal amplitude. A capacitive divider or voltage monitor is employed to measure the capacitance of the transducer. The voltage monitor output is used by the scaling algorithm of a compensator to determine the scaling factor to be applied to the US transducer signal to compensate for the effect of temperature oil the transducer sensitivity. Calibration procedures and software are disclosed for determining the coefficients of the scaling algorithm to compensate for temperature effects and also to compensate for installation factors, transducer manufacturing variations, and circuit board effects. The system disclosed is useful for other types of signal processing in addition to temperature compensation of AOS ultrasonic signals, and may be used in other ranging devices such as cameras, golf or binocular range finders, and measuring devices and instruments.
