Envelope Folding System

US Patent:
4608039, Aug 26, 1986
Filed:
Apr 13, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/599855
Inventors:
Edward T. Ferri - Morgan Hill CA
Paul E. Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
Assignee:
Seaborn Development, Inc. - Campbell CA
International Classification:
B31B 128
US Classification:
493164
Abstract:
An apparatus for folding envelope blanks comprises a plurality of platform assemblies which are rotatably mounted on a base. The platform assemblies are incrementally advanced around the base, and separate mechanisms located around the periphery of the base perform the individual folding operations. Particular advantages are achieved by including the side flap folding mechanism on the platform assemblies so that the folded flaps are held firmly in place until the envelope is removed from the machine.

Computer Magnetic Media Burnisher

US Patent:
4535567, Aug 20, 1985
Filed:
Aug 26, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/526966
Inventors:
Paul E. Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
Assignee:
Seaborn Development, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
B24B 2100
US Classification:
51140
Abstract:
A floppy disk burnishing and packaging machine and method including pick up, burnishing, packaging and collection assemblies. A transfer mechanism moves disks between the various assemblies and a control system coordinates the operation in each so that processing proceeds simultaneously in each according to a particular sequence. Disks are removed from a supply stack one at a time with part of that process involving curling the peripheral edge of the topmost disk upwardly away from the stack. The burnisher includes air knife hold down devices to force the disks against burnishing rolls over which burnishing tapes are moved. The air knife devices also cause a slight amount of wrapping between the disks and the burnishing rollers to increase the burnishing area. Further, the disk is oscillated during burnishing, relative to the burnishing rolls, to improve burnishing. Burnished disks are automatically packaged in protective jackets which are ejected and collected.

One-Piece Combination Clip

US Patent:
3968546, Jul 13, 1976
Filed:
Jan 13, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/540657
Inventors:
Paul E. Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
John R. Wyant - Marietta GA
Assignee:
The Mead Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
B42F 100
US Classification:
24 679
Abstract:
A one-piece molded clip for holding a tablet or sheets of paper on a clip board or other supporting structure and including a pencil or pen holder formed integrally with the clip. The clip has a base portion which may either be provided with openings for rivets to attach the clip to a supporting structure or with integrally formed studs. A spring is integrally formed with the base and consists of a first wall which projects upwardly from the base and a second wall which projects outwardly and downwardly and terminates in a gripper disposed beneath the plane in which the lower surface of the base lies to provide increased gripping power when the clip is attached to a surface. The pen or pencil holder consists of a slot defined by the upwardly projecting wall of the spring and another wall extending in spaced, approximately parallel relationship thereto.

Album

US Patent:
3956836, May 18, 1976
Filed:
Dec 17, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/533477
Inventors:
Paul E. Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
Assignee:
The Mead Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
G09F 1106
US Classification:
40102
Abstract:
An album or similar book-like article having a flexible one-piece spine of extruded construction which includes a series of fingers extending the length of the spine and projecting from an inner surface thereof. A three ply, laminated page formed with the center ply shorter than the outer plies to provide a slot extending along one edge of the page is attached to each finger by gluing the fingers in the slots. The spine is provided with areas of reduced thickness extending longitudinally thereof intermediate each pair of fingers to provide increased flexiblity at these points and thereby allow the pages to lie flat when the album is open. Additionally, fasteners are provided for interconnecting two or more album units to form a composite album.

Wire Forming Apparatus

US Patent:
4047544, Sep 13, 1977
Filed:
Dec 27, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/754243
Inventors:
Paul Edward Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
Kenneth Harold Dawson - Newark CA
Assignee:
The Mead Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
B21F 104
US Classification:
140105
Abstract:
This invention relates to an improved wire forming apparatus of the type wherein a pair of rotatable wheels are disposed alongside of each other, a plurality of pins are secured to each of the wheels about the periphery thereof, and mounting means rotatably support the wheels in such a manner that their axes of rotation are angularly disposed to each other. The improvement herein comprises looping means disposed adjacent to the peripheries of the rotatable wheels, the looping means being discontinuously rotatable about a central axis. The central axis of the looping means is offset from and parallel to a plane defined by the plurality of pins secured to either of the wheels about the periphery thereof. The looping means intermittently engage a strand of wire and impart an undulatory configuration thereto. In addition, pushing means are integrally disposed adjacent the looping means for transferring a looped strand of wire from the looping means to one of the pins disposed about the periphery of the rotatable wheels.

Machine For Sealing Disc Covers

US Patent:
4367117, Jan 4, 1983
Filed:
Mar 16, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/243834
Inventors:
Paul E. Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
Assignee:
Discover Technology, Inc. - Campbell CA
International Classification:
B65C 100
US Classification:
156443
Abstract:
Covers for floppy discs and like media are first formed with three sides sealed and thereafter the disc is inserted. A fourth flap must then be folded and glued for permanent sealing of the disc. The subject machine receives the unsealed cover with the disc inserted and folds and glues the flap to seal the disc in the cover.

Binder Ring

US Patent:
3950107, Apr 13, 1976
Filed:
Jun 26, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/483123
Inventors:
Paul E. Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
Assignee:
The Mead Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
B42F 302
US Classification:
402 22
Abstract:
A one-piece, molded plastic binder ring that may be formed with an integral post for attaching the binder ring to the spine of a loose leaf cover. The binder ring includes a T-shaped socket in its base which receives a cross bar of a flexible strap molded integrally with the base, and locking projections are formed in the socket to lock the strap cross bar in a pocket formed in lower surface of the base of the binder ring.

Wire Forming Machine

US Patent:
4165767, Aug 28, 1979
Filed:
May 16, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/906607
Inventors:
Paul Seaborn - Los Gatos CA
Jorn-Uwe Lemburg - Hamburg, DE
Assignee:
E. C. H. Will (GmbH & Co.) - Hamburg
International Classification:
B21F 104
US Classification:
140105
Abstract:
A machine which converts a strand of wire into a body of meandering shape has two carriers which rotate about parallel axes and respectively carry annuli of pins. One annulus of pins surrounds the other annulus of pins, and each pin of one annulus is adjacent to a pin of the other annulus. When the carriers rotate, neighboring pins of the two annuli move toward each other during one-half of each orbital movement about the respective axes and away from each other during the other half of each orbital movement. A looping device winds the wire alternately about the oncoming pins of the inner and outer annuli while the neighboring pins move away from each other whereby the wire is converted into a meandering body and the wire portions between successive pins are stretched to assume a predetermined shape. The meandering body is stripped off the pins while the neighboring pins move nearer to each other. The meandering body can be used as a starting material for binders which connect the sheets of note books, calendars or the like.
