Abstract:
The present invention describes a communications system that utilizes frequency division multiple access (FDMA), code division multiple access (CDMA), and time division multiple access (TDMA) techniques for providing efficient use of frequency spectrum while supporting a large number of transmitters/users (2-6). Many users of the communications system share a common frequency band, but each transmit their respective message bursts (50) at different and specific times via a TDMA technique. To facilitate synchronization of the TDMA technique, each transmitter of the system is synchronized to a common timing reference (1) thereby abating the need to maintain synchronization between the transmitters (2-6) and receivers (8-12) of the system. Each TDMA message is then transmitted via a spread spectrum technique by multiplying (82) the message burst to be transmitted by a pseudo-random sequence of ones and zeroes (84) and transmitting such spread spectrum message burst for reception by one or more receivers within the system.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for aging a catalyst includes selecting an initial catalyst conditioning parameter, such as time and temperature and selecting a kinetic parameter, based on the selected time and temperature parameter, for the catalysis of CO and HC oxidation by the catalyst. A prediction of the vehicle tailpipe emission level, based on the selected kinetic parameter is made. The predicted level is then compared to a target level to determine whether the particular parameters chosen are appropriate to age the catalyst. The catalyst is then aged based on the desired selected parameters.

A system for increasing temperature in an exhaust aftertreatment system upstream of an exhaust aftertreatment device, such as a selective catalyst reduction (SCR) device, is provided. Abstract:
An exhaust system for a diesel engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may include a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) configured to receive exhaust gases from the engine and oxidize hydrocarbons in the exhaust gases and a passive NOx adsorber (PNA) downstream from the DOC and configured to store NOx from the exhaust gases at temperatures up to 150 C. A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system may be downstream from the PNA and configured to reduce NOx in the exhaust gases. The PNA may be configured to release the stored NOx at temperatures above 200 C. The DOC upstream of the PNA may reduce the amount of NO that is generated by the PNA by oxidizing hydrocarbons before they reach the PNA.
