10/130615
Inventors:
Jeffrey R. Shutic - Wakeman OH, US
Edward L. Jones - Strongsville OH, US
Michael S. Thomas - Elyria OH, US
Andrew M. Peddie - North Royalton OH, US
Kenneth A. Kreeger - Avon Lake OH, US
Joseph G. Schroeder - North Royalton OH, US
Assignee:
Nordson Corporation - Westlake OH
International Classification:
B05B 15/12
B05C 19/00
US Classification:
118309, 118326, 454 53, 55DIG 46
Abstract:
Systems and methods for applying powder coating materials in electrostatic spray systems are provided. For example, a gravity feed of recovered powder coating from the recovery system to the feed system is disclosed. In addition, a powder feed system is disclosed wherein a powder suction lance assembly has only two operable positions, a first for feeding powder from a fluidized hopper and also corresponding to a purge position for a novel purge manifold, and a second retracted position for powder color changes and servicing. Also, a pump assembly block in physical communication with an air line attachment plate, a suction tube plate, and a hose manifold is disclosed. A plurality of attachment members removably attach the air attachment plate, a suction tube plate, and the hose manifold plate to the pump assembly block. Method for applying a first powder color and a second powder color in a powder feed center are also provided. The one method includes, among other things, the step of replacing a first pump assembly and with a second pump assembly that is in fluid communication with the one or more spray devices.

Powder Coating System With Improved Overspray Collection

US Patent:
7325750, Feb 5, 2008
Filed:
Jun 25, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/888679
Inventors:
Jeffrey R. Shutic - Wakeman OH, US
Larry R. Fenik - Avon Lake OH, US
David Mancuso - Westlake OH, US
Andrew M. Peddie - North Royalton OH, US
Erich W. Selic - Widnau, CH
Joseph G. Schroeder - North Royalton OH, US
Herman E. Turner - Elyria OH, US
Assignee:
Nordson Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B05B 17/00
US Classification:
239 1, 239693, 239690, 427345, 427350, 427478, 118309, 118312, 118326, 55315, 55431
Abstract:
Powder overspray that is extracted from a spray booth is recovered back to a powder supply that is used to supply powder to the spray guns inside the spray booth. The powder overspray extracted from the booth is separated from the high flow air stream by a separator such as a cyclone separator. The powder falls into a transfer pan and a vacuum is used to convey the powder from the transfer pan to a vacuum receiver. The powder is then discharged to the feed hopper in the feed center. The use of a vacuum to convey powder from the cyclone to the feed center in effect permits substantially all of the powder overspray to be recovered from the spray booth directly to the feed hopper with minimal dwell or residence time within the cyclone or vacuum receiver subsystems during a spraying operation. The receiver can be rotated for easy cleaning, and the vacuum line cleaned by one or more cleaning elements drawn through the vacuum line.

Quick Color Change Powder Coating System

US Patent:
6375093, Apr 23, 2002
Filed:
Oct 27, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/697887
Inventors:
Terrence M. Fulkerson - Parma OH
Andrew M. Peddie - North Royalton OH
Joseph G. Schroeder - North Royalton OH
Assignee:
Nordson Corporation - Westlake OH
International Classification:
B05B 1502
US Classification:
239112, 239318
Abstract:
A quick color change powder coating system has a powder supply, a powder pump that receives powder from the powder supply through a suction pick-up tube, a spray gun and a powder hose that connects the pump to the gun. The apparatus includes a purge air switch assembly and a first air source that provides air at purge pressure to a first inlet of the purge air switch assembly. A second air source provides flow rate air to a first pump inlet and atomizing air to a second inlet of the pump via a purge air switch assembly. Powder is drawn up the tube and into the pump by suction produced by flow rate air into the pump. A purge inlet is associated with the powder inlet to the pump. The purge air switch assembly operates in response to a purge control signal to connect purge air to the atomizing inlet at the pump and to the pumps purge inlet; whereby the pump, hose and gun can be purged at the same time. Purge air may also be provided between the pump and hose and between the hose and the gun to further increase purging efficiency. A powder hose cleaning device is also provided which includes a wiper device such as an annular seal that closely fits about the tube exterior.

Powder Spray Gun

US Patent:
2005002, Feb 3, 2005
Filed:
Aug 26, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/927269
Inventors:
Alan Knobbe - Loveland OH, US
Andrew Peddie - North Royalton OH, US
John Wolanin - Brunswick OH, US
John Traylor - Elyria OH, US
Bryan Bowman - Indianapolis IN, US
Paul Meyers - Indianapolis IN, US
Daniel Thompson - Vermilion OH, US
Joseph Schroeder - North Royalton OH, US
International Classification:
B05B005/00
US Classification:
239280000, 239690000
Abstract:
An electrostatic spray gun apparatus includes a spray gun housing and a nozzle attached to a spray end of the housing, and a powder path that extends in a substantially straight line along an axis of the housing from the powder inlet to the powder outlet. The powder path is in the form of an enclosed smooth powder passage that is substantially continuous and uninterrupted from the powder inlet to the powder outlet to eliminate substantially all recesses or gaps that could capture or trap powder. The powder passage is formed by a plurality of tubular segments that are aligned along the housing axis and abut end to end. that when assembled in the housing axially compress the segments together to substantially eliminate dead spots or recesses to form the continuous smooth powder path. A gun purge function is provided that allows a purge line to be installed on the gun assembly. A cartridge valve and conductor assembly is provided between the gun electrode in the nozzle and the output of the voltage multiplier. The cartridge includes a conductive path to provide electrical continuity from the multiplier to the gun electrode, and also includes valve, preferably in the form of a stem check valve, that closes when the gun electrode is removed or at least unseated from the nozzle. The gun also includes a tube mount arrangement wherein the tube mount is rigidly held together with the gun housing in axial compression by a tie bar.

Powder Coating Spray Booth With A Powder Extraction System

US Patent:
6730167, May 4, 2004
Filed:
Jun 25, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/891057
Inventors:
Jeffrey R. Shutic - Wakeman OH
David Mancuso - Westlake OH
Andrew M. Peddie - North Royalton OH
Edward L. Jones - Strongsville OH
Assignee:
Nordson Corporation - Westlake OH
International Classification:
B05C 1500
US Classification:
118309, 118308, 118319
Abstract:
A powder spray booth includes a booth canopy wall arrangement to contain powder during a spraying operation; and a booth floor that is rotatable relative to the booth wall during a spraying operation. The floor can be rotated about an axis that is also the longitudinal axis of the spray booth. The booth may be generally cylindrical in shape with a round floor. The booth canopy and top are supported on a base frame separately from the floor. By this arrangement, the floor can be rotated relative to the booth canopy. A powder extraction apparatus in the form of a low pressure duct suspended off the floor draws up powder that has collected on the floor. The extraction duct is stationary with respect to the rotating floor during a spraying operation. The floor may also be translated along the axis of rotation between a first position in which the floor can rotate and a second position in which the floor is sealed against a lower edge of the booth canopy wall. The booth canopy and floor are made of composite materials that are very low in conductivity to minimize powder adhering to the floor and booth walls.
