Abstract:
A control is disclosed for a section of an I. S. machine which produces vertically standing bottles having a finish portion at the top thereof, with two vertically separated gripable finish portions. The section has a takeout displaceable between advanced and retracted positions, tongs carried by the takeout which can be closed, and an opposed pair of blow molds which can be displaced from a closed position to an open position. A takeout control controls the advancement of the takeout to either a first âinâ position for gripping one of the gripable finish portions or a second vertically lower âinâ position for gripping the other gripable finish portion and for retracting the takeout from either the first or second âinâ position to a selected âoutâ position. A tongs control controls the closing of the tongs and a blow mold control controls the displacement of the blow mold pair to an open position. The control can operate in a preheat blow mold cycle for first operating the takeout control to advance the takeout to the first âinâ position, second operating the tongs control to close the tongs, third operating the blow mold control to displace the pair of blow molds to the open position, and fourth operating the takeout control to retract the takeout to the âoutâ position.

A shear mechanism for shearing discrete gobs from at least one runner of molten glass has a shear assembly which is displacable back and forth along a pair of guide rails. The assembly has at least one shear supported on an arm which has a bearing at one side which is operatively associated with one of the guide rails. The support bearing has a lower bearing surface which engages the bottom of the guide rail and an upper bearing surface which supports the top surface and the lower bearing surface can be displaced away from the guide rail by operating a release which is located on the top of the bearing.

A mold opening and closing mechanism for an I. S. machine has a pair of opposed mold support mechanisms for carrying at least one opposed pair of mold side portions. Each mold support mechanism includes a yoke having a first vertical bore and a second horizontal bore. Molds are carried by upper and lower inserts which also have a hole extending vertically therethrough. An insert carrier is linearly displaceable between retracted and advanced positions and the inserts and the yoke are secured to the carrier by a first pin slidably extending vertically through the vertical holes in the inserts and yoke, and through a vertical hole in the carrier. A second pin slidably extends through this yoke horizontal hole and the drive assembly is connected to this second pin.

Abstract:
A blow mold assembly for an I. S. machine for blowing a parison of glass and cooling the blown parison into a formed bottle which can be removed from the blow mold. A blow head is lowered onto a blow mold and final air is applied. The blow head is lifted a selected vertical distance above the top surface of the blow mold to an exhaust position allowing cooling air to escape from the blow mold. The selected vertical distance is selected so that at least a minimum pressure will continue within the formed bottle. The blow head is maintain at the exhaust position for a predetermined time and then retracted. A first pressure is applied while the blow head is at the lowered position and a higher pressure is applied while the blow head is at the escape position.
