Symbology Reader Illumination System

US Patent:
5684290, Nov 4, 1997
Filed:
Dec 15, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/573518
Inventors:
Kevork G. Arackellian - Everett WA
Steven M. Bunce - Mill Creek WA
Joel T. Aragon - Everett WA
Assignee:
Intermec Corporation - Everett WA
International Classification:
G06K 710
US Classification:
235472
Abstract:
A symbology reader employing an area detector and LEDs mounted at various angular orientations on a printed circuit board for illuminating a target object in an object plane. Each of the LEDs is oriented according to a desired beam vector to illuminate a particular area of the object plane so that the sum of the beams produces a desired illumination pattern. In one embodiment, the illumination pattern is selected to be inversely proportional to the sensitivity of the area detector to provide an even response over an entire image area. The individual LEDs are angularly aligned by an alignment board having an alignment aperture for each LED. The LEDs are mounted onto the printed circuit board with their body portions spaced apart from the board and supported by semi-rigid wire leads soldered to the board. Each of the alignment holes of the alignment board is laterally offset slightly from the mounting position of the LED. The LEDs are angularly aligned by moving the alignment board toward the printed circuit board and engaging sidewalls of the alignment holes with the LED body portions to deflect the LEDs toward a desired angular orientation.

Method And Apparatus For Providing Clean Aperture Through Symbology Reader Window

US Patent:
5608578, Mar 4, 1997
Filed:
Aug 2, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/284823
Inventors:
Steven M. Bunce - Mill Creek WA
Joel T. Aragon - Everett WA
Assignee:
Intermec Corporation - Everett WA
International Classification:
G02B 2700
B60J 100
G06K 700
E06B 324
US Classification:
359609
Abstract:
A method and window for providing a clean aperture at the reading face of a symbology reader. The window includes a layered structure including laminar sheets of optically transmissive material overlaying a window base and the adjacent laminar sheets. Each laminar sheet is releasably bonded to the window base. In use, when the outermost laminar sheet is damaged, it is peeled away to reveal the clean sheet beneath. In one embodiment, each laminar sheet includes an integral grasping tab projecting outwardly. The grasping tabs in each successive sheet are offset to permit a user to grasp the single tab corresponding to the outermost laminar sheet to peel it away. In one embodiment, a flexible boot covers an edge portion of the window to protect the window structure and retain the laminar sheets from being inadvertently peeled off. In one embodiment, the grasping tabs are replaced with recesses to provide access for gripping subsequent sheets.

Assignee:
Sonosite, Inc. - Bothell WA
International Classification:
A61B 800
US Classification:
600443, 600459, 600437
Abstract:
A hand held ultrasound system comprises a balance body, a transducer assembly connected to said balance body via a communication means and a plurality of control elements arranged in an ergonomic fashion on said balance body, such that a user may hold said system and operate at least one of said control elements with the same hand. In particular a medical ultrasound system comprising a balance body incorporating system electronics, a power supply and a user interface wherein the user interface comprises a D-controller and a touch screen and a transducer assembly attached to the balanced body by a cable.

Primary And Secondary Latching System For Securing And Protecting A Replaceable Portable Battery Pack

US Patent:
5401592, Mar 28, 1995
Filed:
Nov 10, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/150486
Inventors:
David Gilpin - Everett WA
Steven Bunce - Mill Creek WA
Assignee:
Intermec Corporation - Everett WA
International Classification:
H01M 210
US Classification:
429 97
Abstract:
A latching system for a battery pack of a hand-held, portable electronic device. A primary latch on the front panel of the battery pack releasably engages a retaining shoulder portion within a battery housing to removably secure the battery pack in a fully installed, electrically connected position within the electronic device. Secondary latches are connected to the left and right side panels of the battery pack at a position away from the primary latch. Each secondary latch is adapted to releasably engage a secondary retaining shoulder within the housing to retain the battery pack in a partially removed position. Elongated electrical contacts are connected to the battery pack and provide electrical contact between the battery pack and the electronic as battery pack is moved from the installed position to the partially removed position. A switch coupled to the battery pack detects movement of the battery pack from the installed position. The primary and secondary latches each have an outwardly biased lever arm movably connected to the battery pack and a head member connected to the lever arm.

Symbology Reader With Fixed Focus Spotter Beam

US Patent:
5598007, Jan 28, 1997
Filed:
Mar 21, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/215202
Inventors:
Steven M. Bunce - Mill Creek WA
Joel T. Aragon - Everett WA
Assignee:
Intermec Corporation - Everett WA
International Classification:
G06K 710
US Classification:
250566
Abstract:
A symbology reader having a pair of optical sources for producing cursor beams. The cursor beams are emitted from two spaced apart locations on the reader and angled with respect to an image direction of a detector assembly within the reader. The cursor beams intersect at a desired object distance to form a composite image indicating that the reader is positioned an appropriate distance from a target object. In one embodiment, multiple composite images are formed. The composite images are spaced apart to delineate the extent of an object field of the detector assembly. In one embodiment, the optical sources are LEDs concealed beneath a mounting platform and emitting light transversely to the image direction. In this embodiment, turning mirrors redirect the light forward of the reader to form the cursor beams.
