Abstract:

A hatch cover for closing and sealing a hatch opening has a latching mechanism at one side of the cover which includes a rotatable hub and plural latching arms extending in different directions from the hub towards a rim of the opening. Rotation of the hub in one direction causes the latching arms to engage the rim and tightly latch the cover to the rim while rotation of the hub in the opposite direction retracts the latching arms and frees them from the rim to enable removal of the cover from the opening. A shaft extends through the cover and is axially slidable and rotatable relative to it. The shaft is axially slidable relative to the hub and continuously engages it so that rotation of the shaft correspondingly rotates the hub. A handle fixed to the upper end of the shaft rotates the hub to activate the arms. Abstract:

A hatch cover for closing and sealing a hatch opening has radial latching arms connected at their inner ends to a rotatable arm-actuating hub on the bottom side of the cover at ball-and-socket connections and loosely connected to the cover near their outer ends. In one rotational position of the hub the arms overlap and apply clamping pressure to the rim of the hatch opening and in a second rotational position of the hub the arm-clamping pressure is released and the arms are retracted from the rim to enable removal of the cover from the opening. The hub rides on camming surfaces of the cover which are shaped so that as the hub rotates in a hatch-closing direction, the arms first extend over the rim of the opening and then pivot into clamping engagement with the rim about their loose connections to the cover, urging the cover through such connections into tight seated engagement with the rim. A resilient sealing ring with double lips and carried by the cover engages the rim when the cover is seated to seal the hatch opening. A shaft extending through the cover and axially slidable and rotatable relative to it and the hub can be selectively engaged with the hub to rotate it.

A boat-carrying rack which is removably fitted to the bed of a pickup truck for carrying a pirogue or other lightweight boat on the truck. In a preferred embodiment, the boat-carrying rack is characterized by an elongated, rectangular rack frame having a pair of fixed outriggers and two pairs of padded, lever-operated foot plates mounted on adjustable outriggers which are selectively extended from opposite sides of the rack frame, respectively, to engage the opposing side walls of the pickup truck bed and removably secure the rack frame in the bed. The rack frame receives the boat, and a bow mount provided on the front end of the rack frame is removably fastened to the bow of the boat by means of a cord. A pair of upward-standing boat guides provided on respective sides of the rack frame receive an adjustable tie-down strap for securing the boat on the rack frame. The padded foot plates can be selectively disengaged from a common side wall of the pickup truck bed to facilitate removing the boat-carrying rack from the truck, as desired.

A method of inhibiting stress corrosion cracking of a bearing 10 of the type installed on a shaft with an interference fit. The surface of the inner ring 16 is shot peened at least at and near the junctures 28,30 of the endwalls 22,24 with cylindrical inner surface 26. The shot peening is performed with sufficient intensity to produce residual compressive stress which offsets at least a portion of the tensile stress resulting from the installation interference fit. The shot peened surface is then coated with a thin metallic material. Finally, the inner bearing ring 16 is baked to remove hydrogen resulting from the coating.

As provided herein, a dual- or quad-ridged broadband horn antenna may include a pair of conductive antenna elements arranged opposite one another for guiding an electromagnetic wave in a longitudinal direction through the horn antenna. In some cases, the pair of conductive antenna elements may include substantially convex inner surfaces and appropriately shaped outer surfaces. The convex inner surfaces may generally function to direct or guide the radiated energy without disturbing the intended radiation pattern. To maintain the intended radiation pattern, the broadband horn antenna may also include a pair of tapered extension elements, each coupled to an outer surface of a different one of the antenna elements at one end thereof. In some cases, a magnetic material may be arranged upon at least a portion of the antenna elements to restrict surface currents to flowing along the inner surfaces only. In some cases, longitudinal grooves may be formed within the inner surfaces to restrict surface currents from flowing in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction.

A bearing is mounted for rotation on a shaft, the bearing having a projected area in both the axial and radial directions. A fixed bearing support housing is mounted adjacent to and spaced from the bearing and forms an annular space for a fluid flow path extending both radially and axially around the bearing to provide a hydrostatic film barrier which centers the shaft during steady state operation. A plurality of reversing fluid jets in the bearing support housing communicate with such annular space. A pair of non-rotating split rings are located forward and aft of the bearing, the split rings each having a taper angle on its inner circumferential surface. A garter spring is mounted in a recess in the outer circumference of each ring and forces the outer edge of the tapered surface into contact with a hardened surface area on the shaft or on a sleeve mounted on the shaft, to support and center the shaft in the transient state and during start-up and shut-down operations. Annular passsages communicate with the annular space around the bearing and with the space formed by the taper angle of the split rings so that when high pressure fluid flows into contact with the taper angle on the split rings, the split rings are forced out of contact with the shaft and permit rotation thereof.
