A rotary pulse generator kit for monitoring the rotation of a shaft includes an enclosure capable of accepting two different sensor modules. Each sensor module may include axially aligned magneto-resistive sensing elements that sense magnetic poles imprinted in a pattern on a rotor that rotates with the shaft. Two sensor modules having different incremental pulse output rates may be supplied with the tachometer kit. In this way, the shaft may be monitored by a pair of sensor modules pre-set at different incremental pulse output rates, mounted to the same enclosure.

Modifications to the cylinder head of internal combustion engines in which the efficiency of fuel combustion is raised by the use of a plurality of liquid, vaporized liquid, and gaseous fuels through the alteration of cylinder compression ratios and spark timing to burn those fuels. It has been demonstrated that certain fuels have salient advantages under specified engine speed and load conditions, and in selected enviroments and vehicle applications, but that no single fuel is capable of excelling in all potential application scenarios. Burning each of these fuels efficiently has required engine specifications optimized to a single fuel or fuel state, such as compression ratio, intake tract design, electronic fuel injector duration and timing, and spark timing curves, which have been severely compromised when they were required to cope with the demands of a second fuel. The solutions demonstrated seek to show how these past compromises may be eliminated or minimized to enable the singular and simultaneous use of selected fuels to increase performance, reduce combustion pollutants, and increase the engine life of internal combustion engines. In addition, many of the possible alternate fuels which may be adapted to this proposal are in abundant domestic supply, and would reduce the undesirable economic effects which accompany large-scale petroleum imports; the consequential balance of trade deficits, dependence on volatile foreign sources,and vunerable tanker fleets and refining facilities.

An encryption-decryption disk drive arrangement has a recordable disk and is configured so that data can be securely stored on the disk. The drive housing or enclosure is sealed, and any attempt to open the housing or to access the internal electronics will cause the encryption/decryption keys and firmware to be erased from EEPROMs in the drive. The drive can be configured so that data are encrypted and distributed between two disks, which can be a writeable CD ROM disk and a magnetic disk. With this disk drive arrangement, the encryption and decryption operations take place in the drive, and do not affect the motherboard or daughterboards of the associated computer. This arrangement can also be used to authenticating or verifying digitally stored documents and records.

A method for obtaining fatigue life information for an article is disclosed. Initially, an area of interest is determined on the article. A durability schedule is defined for that article as a predetermined number of passes through each of a predetermined number of events, each of the events being defined by the generation of strains in the article having a predetermined range of magnitudes and frequencies. A total effective damage factor caused to the component by one pass through each of the events is next determined, which permits the determination of a total durability factor for all of passes for all of the events defined in the durability schedule. The article is then tested by subjecting it a plurality of passes through all of the events defined in the durability schedule until a termination criteria is reached. Then, a total actual damage factor can be determined based upon the number of tested passes through each of the events defined in the durability schedule. A final durability factor for the article is lastly determined by dividing the total actual damage factor by the total durability factor.

A tachometer for monitoring the rotation of an output shaft (e. g. of a motor, where the motor is enclosed within a standard NEMA housing), includes an enclosure (e. g. adapted to be secured to an end plate of the motor housing), the enclosure having a radial center and a longitudinal axis which, when the enclosure is secured to the housing, are aligned with a longitudinal axis of the output shaft. The enclosure has at least one mounting surface in a peripheral wall portion thereof, the mounting surface having an aperture formed therein which opens in a radial direction. A sensor module including a pair of axially aligned magneto-resistive sensors is mountable on the mounting surface of the enclosure such that the module protrudes through the aperture with the sensors facing radially inwardly. An annular drum having a pair of magnetic patterns arranged on a peripheral end surface thereof is operatively fixed on the motor output shaft via a hub member such that the magnetic patterns on the drum are automatically aligned with the sensors and radially spaced therefrom by a predetermined radial gap when the drum is fixed to the output shaft and the enclosure is mounted on the end plate in an operatively assembled relationship.

A recording and/or reproducing device, such as a cassette tape player, records data on the cassette in advance of the recorded material, to identify the recorded selections by artist, title, etc. , and also to identify the position at which each of the recorded selections begins. When the tape is played back, this header data is read from the tape, and the artist, title and location data are stored in memory. The stored title and artist data are displayed, and can be scrolled by a user. The user then selects a desired one of the recorded selections based on the displayed artist and title data. The player automatically advances the tape or other record medium to the beginning of the desired selection based on the location data stored in the memory. A number of selections can be automatically played in this fashion in the order desired. The apparatus can be an automotive tape player, wherein the associated display unit is a heads-up display reflected in the vehicle windshield.

In a microprogrammed data processing pipeline system comprising a plurality of stages, microinstructions for controlling the stages are stored as templates in an addressable template micromemory store and are provided automatically and sequentially to the stages of the pipeline system. Operation microcode is introduced for a particular stage after the templates are issued from the micromemory store but before provision thereof to the pipeline system, thereby allowing a single template to control a plurality of different operations of a particular stage within the pipeline system. Provision is also made to freeze or inhibit the issuance of subsequent templates during the execution of excessively long operations in the particular stage.
