Gear Coupling And Hub

US Patent:
4955769, Sep 11, 1990
Filed:
Aug 4, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/389527
Inventors:
John H. Crankshaw - Erie PA
Assignee:
Dynetics, Inc. - Erie PA
International Classification:
B23F 100
F16D 318
US Classification:
409 12
Abstract:
A gear hub for flexible gear couplings wherein the teeth of said hub are cut while the hub is being moved constantly through all of the positions that the hub would assume relative to the sleeve during operation with the hub shaft misaligned with the sleeve at the maximum angle of misalignment for which the coupling is designed.

Overrunning Clutch

US Patent:
4275805, Jun 30, 1981
Filed:
Jun 5, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/912746
Inventors:
John H. Crankshaw - Erie PA
International Classification:
F16D 1100
F16D 4108
US Classification:
192 46
Abstract:
An overrunning clutch made up of an input member and an output member with locking means between them for positively locking the two members together and a racheting member on the input for moving the locking member from a position to positively lock the input member to the output member when the input member rotates at a higher speed than the output. The clutch has an improved mechanism for engagement of the drive and driven parts.

Method Of Manufacturing A Clutch Plate

US Patent:
4385429, May 31, 1983
Filed:
Apr 30, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/259034
Inventors:
John H. Crankshaw - Erie PA
Assignee:
Dynetics, Inc. - Erie PA
International Classification:
B23P 1900
US Classification:
29434
Abstract:
A clutch is disclosed having an input shaft and an output shaft and having alternate pairs of discs interfitting with each other. Half of the discs being attached to the input shaft and half to the output shaft. The discs are knurled on one side in a grooved pattern. The knurling is deeper at the inner radius than at the outer radius so that there is a major restriction to oil flow from the inner radius to the outer radius. The restriction of the grooves insures that the grooves are completely filled with oil during operation of the clutch.

Slip Friction Clutch

US Patent:
4009771, Mar 1, 1977
Filed:
Mar 17, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/558893
Inventors:
John Crankshaw - Erie PA
Assignee:
Dynetics Inc.
International Classification:
F16D 2310
US Classification:
192105A
Abstract:
The specification discloses a clutch assembly made up of a sleeve and a hub supported on each other for free rotation and being suitable for connecting a drive member to a driven member. The hub and sleeve have friction discs attached to them and the friction discs engage a pressure ring. A supply of oil under pressure is connected to the cavity that receives the clutch plate and when oil is admitted to the friction ring cavity it first fills this cavity then spills over into a cavity containing an actuating piston connected to the pressure ring where the oil forces the actuating piston together with the pressure ring into engagement with the clutch plates thereby forcing them into frictional engagement with each other. A reaction force against the clutch plate is provided by a pressure and adjusting ring from which a reaction force is transmitted to the clutch plate through a Belleville spring. By means of the adjusting ring, the pressure at which the clutch plates will slip can be adjusted.

Synchronizing Coupling

US Patent:
4047602, Sep 13, 1977
Filed:
Dec 11, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/639910
Inventors:
John H. Crankshaw - Erie PA
Assignee:
Dynetics, Inc. - PA
International Classification:
F16D 1100
US Classification:
192 53F
Abstract:
A gear coupling and oil actuated synchronizing clutch is disclosed. The oil is connected to the clutch by a static seal ring freely supported on the drive shaft, next to a shaft flange. The seal ring has a piston groove containing a piston ring adjacent the flange overlying a narrower groove in the flange. Engage oil in the static seal groove forces the piston ring against the flange and holes in the piston ring conduct oil to the flange groove and then to the disc pack and clutch actuating mechanism. The disc pack has a larger inlet than outlet so that the engage oil fills the pack introducting a viscous drag to the discs and initiating action of balking mechanism. Drive pins are advanced into kidney shaped holes where they form an interium connection after synchronism and before gear engagement so that the drive gears can freely register with the driven gear.

Fixture For Making A Gear

US Patent:
4955768, Sep 11, 1990
Filed:
Sep 5, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/389769
Inventors:
John H. Crankshaw - Erie PA
Assignee:
Dynetics, Inc. - Erie PA
International Classification:
B23F 900
US Classification:
409 10
Abstract:
A fixture for manufacturing hubs for flexible gear couplings wherein the teeth of said hub are cut while the hub is being moved constantly through all of the positions that the hub would assume relative to the sleeve during operation with the hub shaft misaligned with the sleeve at the maximum angle of misalignment for which the coupling is designed.

Synchronizing Clutch

US Patent:
4064979, Dec 27, 1977
Filed:
Aug 17, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/715047
Inventors:
John H. Crankshaw - Erie PA
Assignee:
Dynetics, Inc. - Erie PA
International Classification:
F16D 2306
US Classification:
192 53F
Abstract:
A synchronizing clutch made up of a quill shaft, a hub, a toothed sleeve for connecting the hub to the shaft and a clutch between the sleeve and the hub for synchronizing the speed of the hub with the speed of the sleeve prior to connecting the hub teeth to the shaft teeth. Drive pins are provided on the shaft for preventing the teeth from interfering at synchronization and an improved adjusting means and a retaining ring provide a space for the clutch discs so that the axial position of the clutch discs relative to the drive pins prior to synchronism is always precisely known.

Method Of Forming Crowned Gear Teeth

US Patent:
4872791, Oct 10, 1989
Filed:
Jun 27, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/211865
Inventors:
John H. Crankshaw - Erie PA
Assignee:
Dynetics, Inc. - Erie PA
International Classification:
B23F 900
US Classification:
409 12
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing hubs for flexible gear couplings is disclosed wherein the teeth of said hub are cut while the hub is being moved constantly through the position that the hub would assume relative to the sleeve during operation with the hub shaft misaligned with the sleeve at the maximum angle of misalignment for which the coupling is designed.
