Abstract:
A flash chamber sized to receive the effluent discharged from a polyolefin reactor during normal operation of the reactor and during a reactor dump, advantageously eliminating a reactor dump tank or alternate flash tank from the equipment outlay of a polyolefin manufacturing process. The flash chamber is sized to hold at least the polyolefin solids discharged from the reactor. A condenser fluidically coupled to an overhead portion of the flash chamber is sized to condense the flow rate of vaporized hydrocarbon (e. g. , diluent, monomer, etc. ) discharged overhead from the flash chamber during normal operation and during the reactor dump.

Abstract:
An olefin polymerization apparatus is disclosed wherein monomer, diluent and catalyst are circulated in a continuous pipe loop reactor and an intermediate product slurry is recovered by a continuous product take off means. The intermediate product slurry is passed to a hydrocyclone to stratify polymer particles based on size. A slurry containing predominantly fines is withdrawn overhead and returned to the reaction zone. The slurry containing predominantly fines is preferably returned to the polymerization zone just upstream of the circulation pump and in a preferred embodiment this pressure differential is the sole driving force for the hydrocyclone separation. In another embodiment the product slurry from the bottom of the hydrocyclone is passed to a solids-liquid separator where the solids settle to the bottom and essentially polymer free diluent is recycled. In another embodiment, the intermediate product slurry is withdrawn via a conical settling leg. Because of the converging nature of the leg, as polymer is withdrawn the velocity increases progressively going from the entry to the exit of the leg thus avoiding polymer buildup.

Methods for controlling the temperature of an olefin polymerization reactor (e. g. , a polyethylene reactor) system are disclosed herein. The olefin polymerization reactor system includes a polymerization reactor and a cooling jacket in thermal contact with the reactor. An aqueous froth is present in the jacket, and the pressure therein is maintained below atmospheric pressure. Control of the pressure in the jacket controls the boiling temperature of the jacket fluid, and thus, controls the rate of heat transfer from the reactor to the fluid in the jacket. This provides an efficient and simple means for controlling the reactor temperature.

Abstract:
A method of treating and disposing of waste water containing salt, such as the brine that results from production of oil and/or gas wells, which includes introducing the waste water into a reverse osmosis unit to produce concentrated brine, and passing the concentrated brine through a combustion heat evaporator wherein said combustion heat is generated in a submerged combustion evaporator or exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine to power a waste heat evaporator to produce a further concentrated brine. The concentrated brine from the combustion heat evaporator can then be mixed with a liquid such as the waste water that is introduced into the reverse osmosis unit. The resulting product can then be injected into a subterranean formation for purposes of disposal. The method allows the volume of the waste water to be significantly reduced while also increasing the salt concentration of the waste water. In other embodiments the reverse osmosis unit and the combustion heat evaporator are used individually.
