A method and system for enhancing processing efficiency in a data processing system which includes multiple scalar instruction processors and a vector instruction processor. An ordered sequence of intermixed scalar and vector instructions is processed in a nonsequential order by coupling those instructions to selected processors. As each instruction is finished an indication of that state is stored within a finish instruction array. The first vector instruction within the ordered sequence is initiated within the vector instruction processor only after an indication that each scalar instruction preceding the first vector instruction is finished. A vector advance signal is generated by the vector instruction processor each time processing of a vector instruction is initiated. A subsequent vector instruction is then initiated when the vector processor assets are available only in response to the presence of the vector advance signal and an indication that all scalar instructions which proceed the subsequent vector instruction within the ordered sequence have finished, without encountering an exception. In this manner, chained processing of vector instructions may be accomplished by initiating processing of a subsequent vector instruction only after possible interruption by a scalar instruction exception is no longer possible.

A machine monitor provides information for ascertaining the health and condition of a machine. The monitor is self-contained, having its own internal power source, electronics, and sensor suite, and attaches directly to the outer frame of the machine. Sensors disposed within the monitor include a machine frame temperature sensor, flux sensor, vibration sensor, and clock. Electronics are also disposed within the monitor for receiving and processing sensor outputs, producing machine status data which is stored over time. Sensors and electronics are housed in a protective bucket which includes an upper housing element joined with a lower housing element. The monitor is attached to the machine in such a way that an engagement surface formed in the monitor establishes sensory contact with the machine, enabling machine sensors disposed in the monitor to sense the machine characteristics. A communications port enables a peripheral device, such as a notebook computer or portable data collector, to communicate with the monitor and download data stored in memory. Downloaded data can be further analyzed and statistically compared to trend data at a base computer to ascertain the health and condition of the machine.

The patient support 14 comprises a planar frame with a plurality of panels 88 removably mounted thereto by means of pins 96 actuated by a lever arm 100. A patient support 14 drive motor 28 provides rotary drive to the patient support 14 through a worm gear 40 locked to a gear linkage, so that it may be stopped and held by the worm gear 40 in any angular position by switching power off to the motor 28. The worm gear 40 is manually disengageable from the remainder of the gear linkage to enable manual movement of the patient support 14 to a horizontal position.

An indexing mechanism comprises a detent spring secured to a shaft and biased into engagement with a long wearing hill and valley insert secured to a housing. A variety of inserts can be secured to a standard housing providing a variety of switching positions and angles of indexing. A plurality of ears extending radially from the insert engage notches within the housing and a pair of spaced arms integral with each of the ears are biased against the walls of the notches to rigidly secure the insert to the housing. A stop element secured to the shaft is provided with a plurality of nubbins engaging a plurality of nubbin receiving notches provided in the detent spring for reinforcing the rotation of the detent spring in response to the rotation of the shaft.

In another embodiment, series operation is employed, wherein each successive stage receives the product from the preceding stage as feed, with fresh water being added. The number of stages is one less than the number of the electrodes.

One or more sensors are provided to sense machine operating characteristics such as temperature, flux, and vibration. Sensor outputs are processed and analyzed by monitor electronics to determine various operating parameters, including machine speed and load, which are stored in memory. Other parameters which can be calculated and stored include cumulative time of machine operation for different categories of loads, cumulative time of machine operation over a predetermined maximum temperature, and total number of machine starts. Monitor electronics are also operable to transform time domain data generated by the sensors to frequency domain data. A communications port enables a peripheral device, such as a notebook computer or portable data collector, to communicate with the monitor and download stored data.
