Manifold For Heat Exchanger And Baffles Therefor

US Patent:
6145589, Nov 14, 2000
Filed:
Mar 10, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/265569
Inventors:
James D. Gowan - Montgomery AL
Assignee:
Thermal Components a division of Insilco Corporation - Montgomery AL
International Classification:
F28F 922
US Classification:
165174
Abstract:
A manifold for heat exchangers with a manifold segment having slots which are perpendicular to the tube axis and spaced in the longitudinal direction and separated by webs, into which hollow flat tubes can be inserted and joined to the contact surface of the respective slot. The webs each have a pair of stampings to strengthen the material on each side of each web and the webs are relatively flat in shape such that the cross-section of the manifold segment has a generally D-shaped profile. At least one baffle is inserted in the manifold segment, centered between a pair of adjacent slots. The baffle has a principle circular edge and a truncated edge so as to have a truncated circular profile substantially corresponding to the approximately D-shaped profile of the manifold segment. The baffle also has an outwardly extending lip over a portion of its perimeter at the principle circular edge, the lip having projections extending from its ends, the projections being dimensioned to provide an interference fit between the baffle and the manifold segment. Circular edge of the baffle has a first radius R. sub.

Floating Flange Half Bearing

US Patent:
5114246, May 19, 1992
Filed:
Dec 3, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/620727
Inventors:
James L. Gowan - Atlantic IA
Assignee:
JPI Transportation Products, Inc. - Ann Arbor MI
International Classification:
F16C 902
US Classification:
384275
Abstract:
A flanged half bearing for motor vehicle engine applications. The flanged half bearing is of the type having a semi-cylindrical shell provided with half thrust washers. The thrust washers are connected to the shell through the coacting of appendages on the thrust washers and recessed portions on the curved edge of the shell. Upon the insertion of the appendages into the recessed portions, the appendages are swaged to retentively engage the washer along the edge of the shell. After swaging, the dimensions of the recessed portion and appendages are such that the washer is capable of axially floating fore and aft relative to the shell, but is incapable of being disengaged from the shell. This provides a flanged half bearing which remains assembled during installation and allows for the accommodation of axial forces and thermal influence of the engine.

Extruded Manifold

US Patent:
6830100, Dec 14, 2004
Filed:
Nov 2, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/985337
Inventors:
James D. Gowan - Montgomery AL
Norman F. Costello - Mt. Pleasant SC
Assignee:
Thermalex, Inc. - Montgomery AL
International Classification:
F28F 904
US Classification:
165173, 165153, 165175
Abstract:
An extruded D-shaped manifold machined from extruded tubing is generally D-shaped in cross-section, with the header being thicker than the tank. At least two longitudinal external ribs are formed on the header exterior, preferably positioned symmetrically relative to the longitudinal axis of the header. The external ribs provide additional strengthening of the header and act as stops to prevent the heat exchanger fins from contacting the tube/manifold joint (which can lead to leakage when the joint is brazed). The number of external ribs and their location depend on the size of the manifold and the precision required in positioning the heat exchanger tubes in the slots. The manifold can be extruded with lengthwise internal ribs extending along the interior sides of the tank to act as stops for the heat exchanger tubes.

Manifold For Heat Exchanger Incorporating Baffles, End Caps, And Brackets

US Patent:
5934366, Aug 10, 1999
Filed:
Apr 23, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/842041
Inventors:
James D. Gowan - Montgomery AL
Assignee:
Thermal Components - Montgomery AL
International Classification:
F28F 922
US Classification:
165174
Abstract:
A manifold for heat exchangers with a manifold segment having slots which are perpendicular to the tube axis and spaced in the longitudinal direction and separated by webs, into which hollow flat tubes can be inserted and joined to the contact surface of the respective slot. The webs each have a pair of stampings to strengthen the material on each side of each web and the webs are relatively flat in shape such that the cross-section of the manifold segment has a generally D-shaped profile. At least one generally D-shaped baffle is inserted in the manifold segment, centered between a pair of adjacend slots. End caps are provided to close the open ends of the manifold, and a bracket can be provided on the manifold to hold it in place. A method of manufacturing the manifolds is also presented.

Heat Exchanger With Extruded Multi-Chamber Manifold With Machined Bypass

US Patent:
2011017, Jul 21, 2011
Filed:
Jan 15, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/688297
Inventors:
Alexander N. Kurochkin - Moscow, RU
James D. Gowan - Lillian AL, US
International Classification:
F28F 9/02
B21D 53/02
F28F 9/22
US Classification:
165174, 2989003
Abstract:
The present invention heat exchanger with extruded multi-chamber manifolds includes at least two panels, with each panel having a row of at least one channel which communicates fluid. The heat exchanger includes a first manifold and a second manifold, the first manifold and the second manifold each having at least two manifold chambers. Each panel is attached to a manifold chamber of the first manifold and a manifold chamber of the second manifold, with each chamber having an inner wall and outer wall. The outer wall has a surface exposed outside the manifold chambers. There is also an opening through the outer wall including a bypass slot. The bypass slot allows fluid communication between the chambers.

Extruded Manifold With Multiple Passages And Cross-Counterflow Heat Exchanger Incorporating Same

US Patent:
5941303, Aug 24, 1999
Filed:
Nov 4, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/964024
Inventors:
James D. Gowan - Montgomery AL
Qi Wang - Montgomery AL
Assignee:
Thermal Components - Montgomery AL
International Classification:
F28D 706
US Classification:
165176
Abstract:
A cross-counterflow heat exchanger comprising a pair of identical and identically-oriented, spaced manifolds and a plurality of parallel heat exchanger tubes extending between the manifolds. Each of the manifolds has an interior, longitudinally-extending dividing wall. In a 2n pass heat exchanger, each manifold is symmetric about a mirror plane, the dividing wall is configured to define n+1 upper channels and n lower channels, and the passages of the heat exchanger tubes are divided into 2n flow paths, n being a positive integer. In a 2n+1 pass heat exchanger, each manifold is symmetric about a rotation axis, the dividing wall is configured to define n+1 upper channels and n+1 lower channels, and the passages of th heat exchanger tubes are divided into 2n+1 flow paths, n again being a positive integer. Further, in a 2n pass heat exchanger, the dividing wall of each of the manifolds includes 2n-1 vertical webs, and each of the heat exchanger tubes includes 2n-1 partitions dividing the passages into 2n flow paths; while in a 2n+1 heat exchanger, the dividing wall of each of the manifolds includes including 2n vertical webs, and each of the heat exchanger tubes includes 2n partitions dividing the passages into 2n+1 flow paths. When the number of vertical webs is greater than 1 (that is, when n>1), the vertical webs alternately extend from opposite interior surfaces of the manifold.
