G01N 25/02
G01N 27/12
G01N 1/22
G01N 33/18
US Classification:
374 16, 7386312, 73 6143, 7333505, 374 20, 374 25
Abstract:
A method for improved handling of a blended fuel includes obtaining a sample of the blended fuel from a storage tank; cooling the same until the sample separates into phases; and determining a risk that the fuel in the storage tank will separate based on the cooling step. An apparatus for assessing the risk of phase separation of a blended fuel includes a test cavity for holding a sample of the blended fuel from a storage tank; a heat transfer device for cooling the sample in the test cavity; and at least one sensor for indicating when the sample in the test cavity has separated into phases.

Line Leak Detector

US Patent:
2007016, Jul 19, 2007
Filed:
Jan 16, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/623525
Inventors:
Ian F. Jarvie - Woodridge IL, US
Assignee:
DELAWARE CAPITAL FORMATION, INC. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
G01M 3/04
G01F 17/00
US Classification:
73 492, 73149
Abstract:
A leak detector for detecting volumetric changes in a liquid volume includes a biased piston disposed in a housing and a liquid passage extending from the liquid volume to an expansible chamber defined by the housing and piston. The leak detector further includes a magnetostrictive sensor including a magnetostrictive waveguide, a magnet operably coupled to the piston and moveable therewith and pulsing and detection devices for detecting the position of the magnet along the magnetostrictive waveguide. A method of using the detector includes exposing the expansible chamber to liquid from the liquid volume and sensing the changes in the liquid volume magnetostrictively by causing relative movement between the waveguide and the magnet to obtain data representative of piston movement which is responsive to volumetric changes in the liquid volume.

Sensing Device Arrangement For Fuel Storage Tanks

US Patent:
7825816, Nov 2, 2010
Filed:
Aug 20, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/841465
Inventors:
Ian F. Jarvie - Woodridge IL, US
Przemyslaw Olaf Iwaszczyszyn - La Grange IL, US
International Classification:
G08B 21/00
US Classification:
340612
Abstract:
A sensing device arrangement for a fuel storage system is provided having at least one storage tank, a plurality of sensing devices positioned in or around the at least one storage tank, and a controller in electrical communication with the plurality of sensing devices. The controller is configured to communicate with each sensing device of the plurality of sensing devices on a single bi-directional data line. A sensing device of the plurality of sensing devices is activated by the controller. Data is acquired by the sensing device and transmitted to the controller over the data line. The controller instructs the sensing device to change to a low power state. The controller receives electrical characteristics from the plurality of sensing devices recognized on the data line and calculates a characteristic of the sensing device arrangement. The controller verifies compliance with an intrinsic safety barrier.

A Method And Apparatus For Fluid Density Sensing

US Patent:
2006024, Nov 9, 2006
Filed:
May 3, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/381428
Inventors:
Ian Jarvie - Woodridge IL, US
Assignee:
Delaware Capital Formation, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
G01N 9/00
US Classification:
073444000
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for measuring density of a fluid. The apparatus includes a shaft adapted to be positioned within a fluid and a biased float disposed on the shaft and capable of movement along the shaft. The apparatus further includes a displacement sensor for detecting a position of the float along the shaft. A method of sensing the density includes positioning the biased float in the fluid and sensing the position of the float to obtain data representative of the density of the fluid.

Line Leak Detector And Method Of Using Same

US Patent:
8316695, Nov 27, 2012
Filed:
May 8, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/437759
Inventors:
Ian F. Jarvie - Woodridge IL, US
Assignee:
Delaware Capital Formation, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
G01M 3/26
F16K 31/18
US Classification:
73 405R, 73 497, 137398, 137409, 137410
Abstract:
An apparatus for detecting a leak in a conduit line includes a housing in fluid communication with the line, a valve including a valve seat and a valve element movable relative to the seat between opened and closed positions, a bypass line around the valve, a flow detector coupled to the bypass line for detecting fluid flow therethrough, and a first mechanism configured to urge the valve element toward the closed position. The apparatus may further include a second mechanism separate from the first mechanism for maintaining the valve element in the closed position until a threshold pressure drop is reached. The first mechanism may operate on the principle of buoyancy and the second mechanism may operate on the principle of magnetism.

Lighted Supervisory System For A Fuel Dispensing Nozzle

US Patent:
6899151, May 31, 2005
Filed:
Jun 7, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/862711
Inventors:
Walter G. Latka - Homer Glen IL, US
Richard J. Klima - Darien IL, US
Ian Francis Jarvie - Woodridge IL, US
Assignee:
Delaware Capital Formation, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
B65B001/04
US Classification:
141392, 141 94
Abstract:
A nozzle is provided for a fleet fuel dispensing system. The nozzle includes an input port that is adapted to receive fuel through a fuel supply hose, and a spout that is configured to dispense fuel into a fuel entry receptacle of a vehicle. A valve assembly is configured to couple the input port with the spout, and is further configured to selectively facilitate the passage of fuel from the input port to the spout. A status light is associated with the nozzle and includes a single LED that is connected with a fleet management system. The status light is configured to selectively illuminate as directed by a fleet management system. The illumination provides information as to whether a vehicle is authorized to receive fuel from the spout. A fuel dispensing system having such a nozzle is also provided.
