Coating With Optical Taggent

US Patent:
6410926, Jun 25, 2002
Filed:
Oct 1, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/410776
Inventors:
Calum H. Munro - Wexford PA
Michael L. White - Pittsburgh PA
Michael J. Pawlik - Shaler Township PA
Ralph C. Gray - Butler PA
Gregory J. McCollum - Hampton Township PA
Assignee:
PPG Industries Ohio, Inc. - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
G01N 2164
US Classification:
2504591, 250302
Abstract:
A method for determining the thickness of a dryable or curable film-forming coating by incorporating a fluorescent component into the coating. The fluorescent component is either a resin solid of the coating, a fluorescent dye or a fluorescent dye attached to a resin solid of the coating. The coating is exposed to ultraviolet or visible light which causes the fluorescent component to fluoresce. The intensity of the fluorescence of the coating is measured and the thickness or weight of the coating is determined from a known mathematical relationship between the fluorescence intensity of the coating when exposed to the light and the thickness or weight of the coating. Additionally, a curable or dryable film-forming coating composition including a curable or dryable organic resin reacted with a fluorescent tag is provided.

Appl. No.:
10/661964
Inventors:
Eldon L. Decker - Gibsonia PA, US
Calum H. Munro - Wexford PA, US
Robert E. Jennings - Ellwood City PA, US
Assignee:
PPG Industries Ohio, Inc. - Cleveland OH
International Classification:

Abstract:
A coating composition containing a resinous binder with colorants and reflective pigments. The colorants absorb visible light at a first wavelength and produce fluorescent light at a second wavelength band when exposed to visible light. When applied to a substrate, the coating composition appears as one color on face from the specular reflection of the colorants off the reflective pigments and a different color on flop from the fluorescent light produced by the colorants.

Abstract:
A curable film-forming composition is provided comprising in a medium (i) 10 to 90 percent by weight based on the total weight of solids in the film-forming composition of a crosslinking agent; (ii) 10 to 90 percent by weight based on the total weight of solids in the film-forming composition of a polymer containing a plurality of functional groups reactive with the crosslinking agent; and (iii) at least 20 percent by volume based on the total volume of the film-forming composition of particles having a mean particle size less than 100 nm. A cured composition comprising the crosslinking agent of (i) and the polymer of (ii) has a cured softening point of less than 30Â C. The particles of component (iii) further have a hardness value greater than 5 on the Moh hardness scale, and have an affinity for the medium sufficient to keep the particles suspended therein. The affinity of the particles for the medium is greater than the affinity of the particles for each other, thereby preventing agglomeration of the particles within the medium. Cured compositions having a film thickness of at least 5 microns demonstrate excellent chip resistance, superior sandability and resistance to scratching, water spotting and acid etch.
